Nattokinase

Subtilisin NAT (Bacillus subtilis enzyme)

Preliminary

Nattokinase is a fibrinolytic enzyme extracted from natto, a traditional Japanese food made from fermented soybeans. It has potent activity in breaking down fibrin, the protein matrix of blood clots, and has been studied for supporting healthy circulation and cardiovascular function.

How It Works

Nattokinase functions primarily as a fibrinolytic agent:

  • Direct Fibrinolysis: Directly degrades fibrin, the protein that forms the structural framework of blood clots.
  • Plasminogen Activation: Enhances the body’s own clot-dissolving system by activating pro-urokinase and tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA).
  • Plasmin-like Activity: Exhibits intrinsic plasmin-like proteolytic activity.
  • Blood Pressure: May inhibit angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), contributing to modest blood pressure reduction.
  • Blood Viscosity: May reduce blood viscosity and improve overall circulation.
